​​Brigadier General John F. King Director of the Joint Staff, Georgia National Guard Brigadier General John F. King is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. where he earned a master's degree in strategic studies. General King also holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and public administration. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in June 1985 at Georgia Military Institute in Macon, Ga. His military education includes Armor Officer Basic Course, M1 Transition Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms Service Staff School, the United States Army Command and General Staff College.Previously, Gen. King commanded the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (ICBT). While deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2010 he served as the senior advisor to the Afghan deputy minister for security. While deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005, Gen. King served as the battalion commander for the 1-108th Armor Battalion and operations officer S-3 of the 48th IBCT.General King has held a number of other key staff and command positions in previous assignments. He served as the commander of Company D, 1-108th Armor in Canton, Ga. during Operations Desert Storm/Shield. He also served as the commander of Troop E, 348th Cavalry and Troop E, 108th Cavalry in Griffin, Ga. His staff assignments include assistant S-3 operations for the 48th IBCT, and operations officer for the 1-108th Armor. He has also served as a scout platoon leader, tank platoon leader and executive officer.Among his decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with 1/OLC, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Combat Action Badge.General King was born in Mexico City and now resides in Roswell, Ga. General King serves as the Chief of Police for the city of Doraville, Ga. He is married to the former Carole Saari and has two children, John Ross and Lauren.
