Commanding General, Georgia State Defense Force

As the commanding general of the Georgia State Defense Force, Brig. Gen. Tom Danielson will oversee the 670 volunteers of the GSDF as they support the Georgia Department of Defense by providing search and rescue, medical support, and disaster relief assistance throughout the state.

In April 2012, Danielson assumed command of the GSDF’s statewide 76th Support Brigade, which provides direct support to the Georgia National Guard.

Before joining the GSDF, Danielson served 30 years in the United States Air Force Reserve as an intelligence officer. His career has included three active duty tours and deployments in support of Operations Desert Shield/Storm; Operations Iraqi/Enduring Freedom 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, Al Udeid – Combat Air Operations Center, and Balad Air Base, Combat Operations; Individual Mobilization Augmentee to Air Combat Command/A2X Commander Langley Air Force Base, Va., in support of Air Force Pakistan Hands Mission. He has also completed active duty annual training assignments with the: 22nd Air Force – Travis Air Force Base; Air Force Special Operations Command/1st Special Operations Wing – Hurlburt Field; 13th Air Force – Guam; 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing – Spangdahlem Germany; Defense Intelligence Agency – Clarendon; Air Force Watch Pentagon; Head Quarters Air Force Materiel Command – Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Oh.; Joint Forces Command – Norfolk, Va.; Allied Command Transformation/NATO – Norfolk, Va.

Danielson is a 1980 graduate of The Citadel, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. In 1990 he earned a Master of Business Administration degree in finance from The Citadel. Danielson also earned a Graduate Certificate in International Business from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1998.

Danielson’s professional military education includes Air War College, Command and Staff College, Squadron Officer School and training as an Intelligence Analyst.

Legion of Merit (SDF), Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Meritorious

Unit Commendation, National Defense Medal with Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Force

Expeditionary Ribbon with Gold Border, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “1” M Device, and recognition as the AFMC Field Grade Intelligence Officer of the Year.
