165th Airlift Wing Receives Air Force Outstanding Unit Award

​SAVANNAH, Georgia, September 14, 2014 - The 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard has been awarded its tenth Air Force Outstanding Unit Award by the Secretary of the Air Force. At the same ceremony, the 165th Air Support Operations Squadron, a geographically separated unit of the 165th AW, also received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award is given to Air Force units that have distinguished themselves through exceptional meritorious service or outstanding achievement that clearly sets the unit above and apart from similar units.

The awarding of the Guidon Streamer was presented to the entire 165th Airlift Wing and members of the 165th ASOS on Sunday, September 14.

The 165th AW was recognized for their completion of over 2,500 combat and combat-support flying hours, flying the venerable C-130H (Hercules) cargo aircraft, in support of the Global War on Terror while deploying over 500 personnel in support of the CENTCOM, SOUTHCOM and AFRICOM combatant commanders. In addition, the 165th AW earned the Air Mobility Command Flying Hour Milestone Award for an unprecedented 165,000 accident-free hours over a 42-year time frame.

The award allows the unit to display a streamer on their unit’s guidon, the award citation will be displayed in their respective HQs, and all unit Airmen will be authorized the Air Force Outstanding Unit Ribbon.
