RESERVE COMPONENT SURVIVOR BENEFIT PLAN (RC-SBP)

         Key Info

What is the RC-SBP

The RC-SBP is designed to provide a benefit to a Soldiers dependent(s) in the event of the Soldier's death prior to age 60 or their early retirement eligibility date. Cost will not exceed 3.5% of the gross retired pay amount for RC-SBP coverage.

Option A: Decline Coverage

In order to decline coverage until age 60 or their reduced age eligibility date a Soldier must provide a notarized DD Form 2656-5, RC-SBP Election Certificate with Soldier and spouse signatures. The Soldier will not pay any premiums for the RC-SBP.

Option B: Deferred Annuity

A deferred annuity would delay the payment of a Soldier's retirement pay to their dependent(s) until the Soldier's 60 birthday or early retirement eligibility date. To select Option B a Soldier must provide a notarized DD Form 2656-5, RC-SBP Election Certificate with Soldier and spouse signatures.

Option C: Immediate Annuity

An immediate annuity would be paid to the Soldier's dependent(s) upon death. This is the default option if a Soldier does not make an election of either Option A or B within 90 days of recieving their 20 yr letter.

Important!

Soldiers who receive a 20 yr. letter have 90 days to make an election, if no selection is made within 90 days the RC-SBP defaults to the Immediate Coverage option for their dependents that are listed in DEERS. If a Soldier declines coverage they will have to wait until age 60 or their reduced age eligibility date to opt in for SBP.
